Treatment for HIV
During the past 10 years researchers have developed drugs to fight both HIV infection and its associated infections and cancers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a number of drugs called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for treating HIV infection. HAART is a major factor in significantly reducing the number of deaths from AIDS in this country. While HAART is not a cure, it has greatly improved the health of many people with AIDS and it reduces the amount of virus circulating in the blood to nearly undetectable levels.

The Maryland Title II and Title IV programs use the U.S. Public Health Service guidelines for the treatment of HIV infection. We also recommend the "2005-2006 Medical Management of HIV Infection" by Drs. Bartlett and Gallant for providers.
