HIV Medication Assistance
Maryland has two programs that provide assistance with HIV/AIDS medication. The programs are:
MADAP
The AIDS Administration provides prescription coverage for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/A) through the Maryland AIDS Drug Assistance Program (MADAP).
MADAP is a statewide program, funded primarily through the Ryan White CARE Act, that helps low to moderate income Maryland residents who are HIV infected receive assistance purchasing the medications they need to treat HIV. The list of medicines covered by MADAP (the MADAP formulary) covers a wide range of medications used to treat HIV infection, opportunistic infections, and complications of HIV infection or related conditions.
To qualify for MADAP you must:
- be a Maryland resident
- be HIV positive
- meet certain income guidelines
MPAP
The Maryland Pharmacy Assistance Program (MPAP) is a state program administered by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that provides prescription coverage to low-income Maryland residents who do not qualify for Medicaid. MPAP covers "maintenance" medications used to treat many chronic health conditions including HIV-infection, diabetes, and high blood pressure. If you qualify for MPAP you are not eligible for MADAP. Adults who are enrolled in MPAP and lack health insurance or Medicare may qualify for free basic primary care through the Maryland Primary Care program.
To qualify for MPAP you must:
- be a Maryland resident
- be a legal permanent U.S. resident
- meet certain income and asset guidelines
