Maryland Prevention Programs

HIV prevention programs target behaviors that put people at risk of HIV infection. While anyone can become infected with HIV, certain behaviors such as injection drug use or unprotected sex put individuals at a greater risk for infection. Many of the HIV prevention programs, operated by local health departments and community based organizations, implement proven health education and risk reduction interventions to target these high-risk behaviors. Other prevention programs distribute risk reduction equipment, disseminate information, and offer opportunities for clients to learn their HIV serostatus. Most HIV prevention programs are local, not statewide. Prevention programs are selected based on Maryland 's prevention priorities.

The AIDS Administration funds and manages these core public health interventions which are widely available:

In addition, the AIDS Administration supports prevention programs for priority populations.
